There is nothing special required to remove tiles, you need the below basic tools, some time and a bit of effort.
Tools Required To Remove Tiles
Sharp Chisel
Hammer
Safety Glasses
Stanley Knife
Dust Sheets
Gloves
Ok, the above may be some statement but it’s true. You really can remove tiles without the need for expensive tradesman and or expensive tile removing tools.
The truth of the matter is that you can remove tiles with a chisel, a Stanley knife and a hammer. That’s it folks…Oh I forgot the most important factor, safety glasses…
Safety glasses are actually the most important tool of all, and nope I am not some health and safety monster it’s common sense, when you remove a tile sometimes they can splinter and shatter which could seriously damage your eye site. Imagine broken ceramic sharp tile flying in your face…No thanks…So please use safety glasses.
It doesn’t always happen, if you do it correctly they can come off quickly, but just be prepared, please do not try this task without safety glasses…
Back to it…You need to start by scoring the grout between the tiles with your Stanley knife, if you have not got a Stanley knife you can use your chisel (that’s what I do).
Please make sure your chisel is in good condition, this means a sharp chisel otherwise it will take you twice as long to complete the task of removing your tiles.
When you have scrapped the grout around the tile you can then get in there with your chisel at an angel, around 45 degrees should do the trick.
When you have your chisel in place, start tapping away with your hammer. You simply wedge your chisel where you have scrapped the grout away for your leverage point. Just think of scrapping off wallpaper only it’s ceramic.
If you are lucky the tile will pop out, if the tiles have been set for many years it may take more time and the tile may shatter and or come off in pieces. Either way you now know how to remove tiles safely without the cost of paying someone to do it for you.
Remember, depending on how old the tiles are it may take you a while to remove a full room such as a bathroom and or kitchen, I would personally set aside a full day if you have a full room to remove.
It is worth noting when you are scratching your head thinking “how do I remove tiles” that it really is worth it long term to remove old for new. You can save time by tiling over old tiles but I recommend that you actually remove them first.
The only note to point out is the amount of time the tiles have been on the wall, you may end up having to re-skim the wall if it is in really bad condition, but chances are that you should be OK.
If you would like to see some actual video shots of all aspects of tiling practises, you can check out Tile Made Easy by Randy Davis. Randy is a respected tiler who offers a top notch tiling course that could save you thousands on tiling jobs around the home.
I have been pretty good at tiling in my past, needless to mention that I indeed owned my own tiling business but I had to stop after a nasty back injury which forced me out of action and into an office job.
I have to say that I enjoyed the easy way Randy explains all areas of tiling which will save you a packet if you are planning to tile any part of your home.
Don’t forget to bookmark this page as I may list some videos myself in the future showing you all how to go about tiling tasks.
In the meantime check out Randy’s Tiling Made Easy course as it’s the only available video tuition that I am aware of the internet today. As an ex Tiler I would recommend Randy’s course to anyone either looking to complete that tiling task or indeed someone who is interested in training to become a tiler.
